Jesus said: “Do not store up for yourselves treasure on earth, where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal; but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven… For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
It is with great joy that we invite you once again to join us in celebrating and supporting the work of The New York Avenue Presbyterian Church through our annual stewardship campaign. We ask you to take this opportunity to renew your commitment between September 23 and November 11, with commitment Sunday on November 4.
Thomas Merton once wrote: “A tree gives glory to God by being a tree.” The tree is giving glory to God simply by living out God’s intentions for it. Accordingly, we give glory to God by living as those created in the image of God and reflecting God’s life in all that we do. That includes reflecting God’s intentions for our lives with respect to our financial resources. As God is the ultimate giver of good gifts to us, then we reflect God’s very life in our giving. This idea is the essence of stewardship: God gives life, and we give in return as a reflection of the divine life.
We have set lofty goals for this year’s stewardship campaign. We are pushing for 100% participation from church members. We are also asking all of us to prayerfully consider how we might increase our pledges, with respect to both our financial giving and the giving of our time and energies to various NYAPC ministries.
Indeed, our stewardship gifts help us embody God’s life in our many ministries. We have already become better stewards of our building with new tenants including Capital Clubhouse and other churches using our sanctuary space. We are looking forward to the Downtown Services Center for those experiencing homelessness soon inhabiting our Park Level space. This new partnership in ministry is a monumental undertaking that we engage with confidence because it will enable us to expand the use of the building entrusted to us in ways that further our urban mission. God has given to us, so we give in return. Our stewardship gifts also enable us to reflect God’s life in our ongoing ministries – Community Club, 7-2-9, Radcliffe Room Ministry, Washington Interfaith Networks, and overseas ministries in Cuba and Kenya.
You can make your commitment using the enclosed card, or through our new online form (http://www.nyapc.org/2019-pledge-form/). Please return your card in the collection plate, by mailing it, or by sending an email to our church accountant, Lance Jameson, at firstname.lastname@example.org. You do not need to wait for November 4 to submit your pledge!
Our exterior banners identify The New York Avenue Presbyterian Church as a community called by God to seek justice, to love mercy and to walk humbly with our God. Thank you for your prayerful consideration of what your financial pledge and gifts of time and energy to the church might contribute to our calling.
