Radcliffe Room Sundays at 9am For over thirty years the Board of Deacons, on behalf of the congregation of NYAPC, has invited men an women living on the street or in a shelter to a Sunday morning coffee hour in the Radcliffe room. Refreshments are provided by the Deacons from the NYAPC kitchen and served by Deacons and members of the congregation. Old familiar hymns are sung around the piano sometimes played by the guests of the Radcliffe room or members of the congregation. In addition to the coffee hour, we have a clothing room! The people who visit the clothing closet have named it "The Store". Men and womens clothing: tee shirts, sweat shirts, sport shirts, blue jeans, casual pants, winter jackets, gloves, scarves, warm hats, boots, and shoes line the shelves and hang on racks. On one recent Sunday morning 83 people selected clothes from the Store. The need for clothes is never ending for people who must wear or carry with then everything they own. The Sunday Radcliffe Room offers Christian caring and help when it is needed. Has the Sunday Radcliffe Room changed in the past 30 years? Sure it has. Over the years the number of men and women living on the street and in shelters has increased tremendously. Now many of our Sunday Radcliffe Room friends are working at low wage jobs; making it difficult to save the first months rent and a security deposit. Can we do more to help? The answer is a simple Yes! There is room for every interest and ability to lend a helping hand. We clearly touch the lives of those who come to us. With additional support we can continue, even expand upon the work this Church began 30 years ago. As witnessed in the Radcliffe room every Sunday the need is great. Using the abundant talents of the community and the Congregation of The New York Avenue Presbyterian Church, we can rise to the challenge and overcome this growing crisis.
