The New York Avenue Presbyterian Church

Sanctuary

From November 5, 1973, when he was sworn in as Special Watergate Prosecutor, until October 25, 1974, when his resignation from that post became effective, Leon Jaworski systematically and relentlessly pursued the truth in the political, factual and legal thicket that was the Watergate Scandal.  His chief nemesis was the sitting President himself, Richard Nixon.  The President and his staff used every means at their disposal to undermine the Special Prosecutor, including invective and recrimination.  At one point, Jaworski stated publicly that he would not sit in the same room with the President.  Yet on Sunday, February 10, 1974, both Mr. Nixon and Mr. Jaworski did sit in the same room, the sanctuary of the New York Avenue Presbyterian Church.  Mr. and Mrs. Jaworski, who had regularly attended the church since they had arrived in town, sat under the stained glass window depicting the Last Supper.  Mr. Nixon and his family, including former First Lady Mamie Eisenhower, sat in the Lincoln Pew.  The title of Dr. Docherty's sermon that morning was "Whatever Happened to Courage?"  By August of that year, Mr. Nixon had resigned and the courage of such public servants as Mr. Jaworski had been sorely tried in the national test that was Watergate.
